Duran Duran

In My Life on 07/05/2009 at 6:07 pm

Okay, I was thinking about how/where to begin this new blog venture of mine and considering a point of departure. Where to start? So many topics. So I’ll start at my core. (not my VERY core–that’s God’s) More the “if your gonna ‘get’ me, then this is part of it” core.

It all started with DuranDuran.

They bridged me from child to adolescent. They bridged me from naive acceptance of everything to “what the crap?”. From concrete to abstract. From safe to uh-oh. They took my brain & shook it up like a little snowglobe–making all my synapses spark & bounce & float in a little real groovy swirly dance. It was the summer of 1983. 1. Every Breath You Take – The Police

I was hanging out with my super-sweet, tres cool & funny cousins Kristi & Lori & Becky in Albany, GA….and hanging out in Kristi’s orange bedroom, ….and over her little radio, came the sounds of magic….little sparks of musical flavor of all sorts that summer….(Rick Springfield was very important)…but Duran Duran with “Is There Something I Should Know” did something crazy wonderful inside of me. It was diff-er-ent. Everything else fit into a box of one sort or another. But Duran Duran. uh-uh. I didn’t “get” them right away….and that’s what got me.

Their looks didn’t hurt anything either. They did, and still do, look amazing. Stylish & different.

Their lyrics, to this day, are some of the most puzzling, talked-about lyrics of all time. In the early days of formation of the band, Nick, John, Roger, & Andy needed a lead singer. In walks Simon LeBon in leopard skin pants carrying a notebook full of hand-scribbled lyrics.

They’re wack. They’re perfect.

The ones everyone knows, but nobody ‘gets’, from “The Reflex”:

The reflex is a lonely child just waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding a treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn’t that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does leaves you answered with a question mark

Who knows what that crap means. Who cares?

All I know for sure is…music for me to that point was safe and predictable and all good, but just…um… normal. Then Duran Duran showed up.
